Hello to you all,
I've been a collector for 40+ years and never attended a national show. I must have looked like a 10-year old on Christmas Morning as I entered Devos Hall in Grand Rapids on the first day at the opening bell. To say things went well, is an understatement. I sold some plate proofs and color trial proofs. I found many fancy cancels. My greatest thrill was going thru a small box of material and finding some treasure. I found and purchased the large "R" cancel from Ridgefield, CT on Scott #65, the wreath of stars around "US" cancel from Albany, NY on a #65 and (best of all) the 'pumpkin" cancel from Waterbury, CT on a #94 (see photos - APS Show 2015).
I also purchased an unknown mint stamp. The dealer, I, nor any other dealers around us, could agree on its color. Lake, Scarlet or Rose were the possibilities which gave the stamp a CV of between $7,000 and $3. The dealer made me an offer I could not refuse (Godfather kisses were not involved). The stamp has already been submitted to APEX for Certification.
The second day of the show I attended a live auction at 3 P.M. Did not get the lot of fancy cancels I wanted, but instead won a block of four trial color proofs, Scott #74TC . What an experience.
One thing for sure, from now in you can count me in on any future trips to national stamp shows within 150 miles. With the huge number of dealers and multiple auctions available, I can almost guarantee you a treasure awaits.
