The A.P.S. Stamp Show in Grand Rapids, MI on August 20-23 was wonderful for this collector and I'm sure by the turnout it was the same for many other collectors as well.
I attended the first 3 days. My wife and I stayed at the host hotel - the Amway Grand. The hotel is connected to the Show venue, DeVos Hall, by an indoor walkway. So we never had to leave the premises for 3 days! (although we did go off-site for food once in a while)
All in all, it was a wonderful time for us. This was the first big show we had attended; it was a bit overwhelming at first! But after an hour or so on the first day, we "settled in".
What a fun time of treasure-hunting. I found many stamps, covers and ephemera to add to my collection. And my wife, who was not a collector, decided to begin her first stamp collection by purchasing two handpainted FDC's by one of the attending FDC artists. She decided to start collecting honeybees on stamps, since her name - Melissa - means 'honeybee' in the Greek.
I'll get some pictures posted on here of the show as soon as I am able.
All in all, it was a fantastic time; meeting up with familiar dealers, meeting new'old' friends, meeting Stamporama members, and talking stamps with many interesting people.
I also had an enjoyable time chatting with Alex Haimann, one of the A.P.S. vice-presidents. A very congenial young man, he seemed genuinely interested in talking with us and wanted to be sure that we had a good time. I was quite impressed with this young man!
If anyone else attended the show, please post your experiences!
