Just a note to inform members who did not make the trip;
Randy, Lou and I (Bruce D.) left Greenville at 7 am on October 24 headed toward Chicago. We arrived at the Stamp King store before 10 am (Chicago time) store opening. Thanks to a call from Randy, Charles (the owner) was there to greet us upon arrival. Charles is a distinguished looking gentleman with white hair and a well trimmed mustache, plus a warm friendly personality.
His store is something to behold! One wall was floor to ceiling bookshelves filled with hundreds of binders and albums. The top shelf was empty binders, but the remaining shelves were binders full of worldwide and US stamps.
The center isle was stacked with boxes of philatelic material marked for sale. On top of those was a set of many drawers of inexpensive covers arranged by topic. Further back in his store was a "no-man's area"- off limits to customers because Charles had not yet inventoried the many boxes piled up there.
On the right side of his store was a table and several chairs for customers. Behind them was Charles' chair and a high bookcase filled with the typical binders found in most stamp stores, containing his stock of individual stamps and covers priced for sale.
We each sat down. Charles asked each of us what we were looking for and he did his best to satisfy our wants. In my case he handed me several glassine envelopes of cancels on the US#65 civil war stamp. As I began my search, Charles went on to help Lou and Randy find what they wanted.
I purchased a dozen or so stamps. Lou made the largest purchase, with Randy bringing up a close second. At one point I thought Lou might even buy the set of 14 international albums lined up on the floor, each containing many stamps. The offer Charles made to Lou was $400. The albums alone were worth twice that. I saw Lou take a long, long pause before turning down the offer.
All-in-all, we had a great time. Each of us highly recommend you consider a trip to visit the Stamp King in Chicago. You will be amazed!
